Theory of Architecture 1 with Sir Ferdinand Dela Paz!

I always look forward to having TOA1 because one, Sir Dela Paz is really funny. Two, Sir Dela Paz shows us really fun things which leads me to three, TOA is very interesting!

So anyhoo, these photos show the things (I dont really know what to call them) that Sir dela Paz made us do. First, he asked us to make shapes and things from a list out of Bristol board. (Thank you Alex because you made everything for me hihihi) Then in class, he asked us to form things out of everything. :)

It has something to do with the principles of design and how they work. These plates showed us exactly that. :)

ARKI WEEK!

Every college looks forward to their college week for one reason only. NO CLASSES. HAHAHA! Kidd!

Anyhoo, for this years college week, classes were asked to design the hallways! We were asked to design our part of the hallway with Roman Architectural styles (correct me if I’m wrong, blockmates I kinda forgot hahaha) Alex, Reg and I painted the first background for the “window” part of our hallway using airbrush! (Thank you Father Alex for teaching us how to use the airbrush hihihi) then our president told me that we need another background for another window and so Stephan helped me with the second (not shown huhu)

After some time with the class hallway design, I got tired of that and so I went with Richard to help Sir Aguilar HAHA We designed a classroom where the competition plates will be showcased! Do you see those stick figures on the wall? I drew those. HAHAHA While Richard and Magao cut them!

Then, RJ asked me if I wanted to put up a business with him during Arki week where we sell cupcakes! I was pretty excited about that because I looove baking hihihi We baked in my house for the first day of the sale. We baked 4 different kinds cupcakes HAHA Then for the second day of the sale, we baked in Alex’s house! It was reallyyyy fun! It was a lot of hard work too but mostly fun hihihi

If you’re not doing anything for Arki week, say you’re a freshman, you’ll definitely get bored. Just stay at home and catch up on some sleep! You can also watch the thesis deliberations for the fifth year because you will definitely learn from there! ;)

In Architecture, you need to help others.

There are competition plates and everyone takes a part of it. How? You design one. Your first design plate for the semester is more often than not, a competition plate as well. Winning this competition may not give much effect while you are a student but will definitely give impact when you’re looking for a job already. I dream to at least place in this competition one day but for now, helping my friends with theirs is enough,

This is how it works, a number of students will be chosen in your class when you submit all your plates. These students will compete with the other students that were chosen from other classes. Then, a few more students will be chosen off that bunch and compete for first, second and third prize.

This sem, three of our closest friends got in! Trina, Camille and Lorraine! Everyone in the barkada helped them out! While the three of them concentrate on their plans, we help them with their scaled models. That’s the thing when you get entered in the competition, you need a scaled model to present to the judges. Their plans were very complicated and so it was pretty hard to make their scaled models but it was fun!

We slept over in my house again to make their scaled models. We stayed up as long as we could in our building, Beato Angelico. We stayed until 10pm there once! We were the last ones out! HAHA! In the end, Camille placed (her scaled model is the blue and green one in the photo)! We felt like we won! We were so happy, we couldn’t believe it! HAHA Felt so rewarding! So even if you don’t get chosen to be part of the competition, don’t me idle! Look for someone that you could help! It feels really good even if they don’t win! You’ll win friendship and I think that’s better. :)

Building Techniques 1 under Sir Alli

BU1 is all about plumbing. Yes, you read that right. Plumbing, plumber, tubero, pipes, fittings and fixtures. At first I though, this is silly! Why in the world am I learning about this?! I even thought, psh this will be easy! Just a couple of pipes, that’s all!

Well, it’s not easy. You will be given handouts for this subject. Handouts that look like books. Do you have friends who’re english majors? Have you seen their readings? Something like that. Those handouts are filled with different kinds of pipes, fittings, fixtures and plumbing systems.

It’s like it never ends. I never knew that there were so many pipes and they all have their own purposes. They even have sizes and specifications that are just too much to handle if you don’t really pay much attention to the things that are in your bathroom.

To be honest, I didn’t really have much trouble with this subject. In fact, I excelled in our preliminary exams for this subject and because of that, I skipped a quiz at will just to play Kinect with my friends. :| WARNING: DON’T DO THAT. Since I did that, I jeopardized(? hahaha) my grade in BU1 but let’s not talk about that HAHA

Tip? Don’t get overwhelmed especially if you get Sir Alli as your professor. He definitely says a lot and draws a lot. So much that you feel like it’s hopeless to remember everything. Think of this subject as Pipedreams. You know, that old school game where you form pipes into each other so that the water wont spill? HAHA Pipedreams Extreme! It’s actually pretty simple if you think about it. Just put pipes in your bathroom and in all of your sinks! Connect them to the sewage system that’s just outside your lot. Drainage system? Connect all the drains to each other then connect it to the drainage system. That kind of easy.

You will be asked to draw the systems and it’s easy too! Just a couple of lines curves on the floorplan! Just seems so hard but it’s not, I swear.

Just don’t get overwhelmed. That’s the secret.

Is it weird that I don’t post about my Design classes even if those clases are the most important ones? HAHA Maybe because up until now, I’m still having trouble with it. I’m not failing or anything close to it, it’s just that Design is so hard and time consuming that after I finish it, I don’t even have enough energy to document and talk about it anymore. HAHA

Design is the principle course in Architecture. This is where you are trained to design structures. This is where you are trained to think like a real architect. This is where you hone both your thinking and drawing skills.

Architecture looks so easy to other colleges but what they don’t know is that they depend on us and our design to do their daily tasks. We have to think of a way so that they can use their facilities in a convenient way. Strategically placing restrooms sounds so easy but if you think of the whole floor, it could be hard sometimes.

I am amazed with my fellow students who excel in this particular subject. They really will be future architects with their skill! I always find myself saying “HINDI KO NGA MAIISIP YUN EH!” whenever I see their design plates because to be honest, their brains are like, destined to think about design solutions and mine is just a normal brain. HAHA!

I’ve taken up 4 Design classes now and I can say that I have definitely improved if I compare my plates now to my first design plate. I need to progress more if I want to graduate and think of a proper thesis and be on the same level as most of my batchmates though HAHA! My professor from Design 4, Sir Gelo Aguilar, told us that Architecture in UST will definitely become harder and we need to be stronger physically, emotionally and mentally to overcome everything and graduate. It scared me out of my wits! But I have to try and strive if I really want this. I will reach Design 10 and graduate this college! I swear bear!

History of Architecture 2 under Ma’am Norma Alarcon is awesome.

My HOA1 experience wasn’t exactly amazing because our professor was… Meh let’s not talk about that HAHA Ma’am Alarcon is known to be one of the greatest professors not only because she’s been teaching in UST for the longest time but also because she really knows what she’s teaching and she knows how to teach!

She opened my eyes to how beautiful Architecture is back then and has instilled in my heart Architectural styles and techniques that make me seem so nerdy whenever I talk about them with my non-arki friends. HAHAHA!

This is our first plate. We were asked to find three Gothic cathedrals from different countries and draw them on a piece of Snow White paper (go to Joli’s to find out what this is hahaha). We had to find a common element within our chosen cathedrals and draw those as well.

I chose the Burgos cathedral from Spain, Chartres Cathedral from France and Limburg Cathedral from Germany! I chose the Rose or Wheel window as their common element. :)

Tip: If she gives you a month to finish a plate, use the 30 days! Don’t do it a day or two before the deadline. HAHA!

Stephan, Kin, Reg, Alex and I!

We stuck together the whole sem! HAHAHA Groupmates everywhere! I was lucky enough to get Reg from 2AR1 and get Stephan from 1AR3! Then Alex chose 2AR1 so she can be with Stephan and I! Kin is Stephan’s childhood friend and Alex’s number 1 enemy. HAHAHA Kin liked to tease Alex and so we easily became friends with him. HAHAH WE LOVE YOU ALEX HAHAHA

Without them, second semester would’ve been the worst. :)

During CFAD week, Kin, Stephan and I were going down the stairs and we ran into one of the most fun and funniest professors in the college, Sir Rizalito Mercado! Everyone who has been under him knows how great it is to be part of his class!

It was funny because it looked like he got out of his way to take a photo with us because after we greeted him he told us, “WE NEED A PICTURE HERE!” then he started dragging us to this wall the CFAD students designed and we wore these colorful afro wigs that match the wall so we could take a picture HAHA It was really funny and it’s amazing how Sir Mercado is so close to his students and he never fails to make us feel special. We miss you, Sir Mercado!

So the reshuffling rumor was true. My batch had to be reshuffled because we had too many students in one class but the college should’ve thought of that from the beginning and not let that happen. I hated it because I learned how to love 2AR6 already and the friendship that I gained from that class is golden. But we all had to get over it and enjoy this new class anyway.

So this is my new schedule for my second semester in my second year of college in UST Architecture. From 2AR6, I became 2AR1! The first class always has the best schedule. My schedule felt like I was in high school. Monday-Friday,7am-4pm! During Wednesday, I had my PE 3 hours after PSS2 (not shown in the photo hehe).

I have to say, that this semester is the hardest semester and I know the succeeding semesters will be harder so I have to brace myself and become stronger. ;)

AIRBRUSH!

Being under Father Alex Bautista could be the greatest thing that happened to me in UST Archi. He is an amazing professor and taught us a lot of things. He also required us to learn how to airbrush which the other classes did not have the privilege to do so.

It’s very expensive and hard to use but once you invest on it and learn its techniques, you’ll love it and be able to use it in the future to make excellent projects.

Learning is always the trickiest part especially if you have a deadline. My friends and I had to sleepover just so everyone could learn and use the airbrush to finish their plates.

That night, I had 7 of my friends over so we can do this VT plate. It was so hard especially because we had trouble with the paint, the board, the airbrush itself and the freaking frisket. The frisket is what you use to mask everything when you airbrush so you can paint by part. I think we bought a really bad quality frisket and so everyone had trouble that night.

We felt so high already because we kept smelling paint (we weren’t really high haha) and it was already around 3-4am. We had this honesty hour where we just shared random things and we kept teasing everyone already. But when the thought of our deadline (which was a few hours away) sinked in, we all panicked which made everything worse. But then a saving grace in the form of an SMS arrived. Classes were cancelled that day and we were all relieved because we were so sure that our plates will not be done that day! We took that chance to sleep and relax for a while. HAHAHA That was priceless and I can never forget that. When we woke up, we invited over the rest of our classmates over to do it together. We were more than 10 in my house and we were all airbrushing away! HAHAHA

I used my airbrush to finish my last plate for VT3 with Father Alex and in the second semester too! I bet carrying this ability around will be very convenient!

2-AR6 Exhibit Experience

My second year first sem block, 2AR6, along with the rest of the year were asked to do an exhibit for HOA on how green UST is and doing this projected was pretty chaotic but everyone, somehow, had fun.

Fatima and I had to look for each and everyone of our blockmates who were scattered everywhere in Manila just so we could take individual photos of them all. Fatima took the photos and I edited them one by one on the first floor working area of Beato just so we can finish it on that day. We did it and had the heads printed so we can stick them to tiny bodies people made. We did that too but alas, someone lost EVERYTHING. I was pretty furious inside and Fatima started crying after that already but whatever we got over it. HAHAHA

We were all divided into groups so we can do everything in the design and although not everything worked out as we planned, we wer successful. It was beautiful in our eyes. HAHA

We also got into trouble with one of our professors because we chose to work with the exhibit rather than to take his exam :/ He was pretty furious so some of our blockmates were not able to take the exam at first. That was an important exam and most of us were scared for our grades because of that but he made everyone take the exam in the end so phew!

This experience brought the class closer together and is said to be one of the most amazing experiences during that semester.

I was looking at my past plates that I posted here. I CRINGED AT EVERY POST HAHAHA Especially my first year plates. Ohgod I can’t believe I passed those! Thank God my second year plates looked better!

This is a manifestation of how one will progress and learn in UST Architecture. Mhmm!

P.S. I miss VT. :(

How's your first year in archi po sa UST? Marami po bang plates and drawings? Tsaka dapat po ba talaga magaling ka mag-drawing or matututo ka na lang in the process? I aspire to be a student of architecture po kasi sa UST kaos natatakot ako kasi wala po talaga akong talent sa drawing and mahina po ako sa imagination.. Thank you.

Hey! I’ve been gone for so long so I don’t remember if I answered this already or kung sobrang tagal na nito and I’m really sorry if you anticipated an answer :/

Anyhooo, first year for archi for me was pretty awesome because of my blockmates. They’re really important. Academics wise, it was bearable. You definitely don’t need to be good in drawing! I had blockmates that knew nothing about drawing or the arts but they excelled! Whilst I was believed to be pretty creative in high school, I was behind! HAHAHA So matututo ka in the process, for sure!

Actually, hindi ka nga nila tuturuan masyado eh. You really will learn by yourself but don’t think about it that way, na walang kwenta yung professors. Think of it as practice and your professors are supplying the ideas. When you pick up a sheet of paper and a pencil, more often than not, wala kang idea kung anong iddraw mo so you’ll just walk away. In Archi, bibigyan ka nila ng something to draw and through that, mapipilitan kang matuto and mag practice kasi it’s true that practice makes perfect HAHA Matututo ka kasi kailangan mo. It will be very frustrating lalo na kung yung mga blockmates mo sobrang galing. Don’t ever give up kasi iba naman sila sayo and one way or another, gagaling ka rin.

Don’t be afraid to get into Architecture in UST because you have no background. Ang kailangan mo lang talaga para magsurvive ay sipag at tiyaga. Effort and willingness to learn. Maddrive ka rin ng future mo kasi mapapisip ka kasi in the future, you know that studying architecture in UST will give a big impact on your future ;)

Sa imagination mo, I’m sure nagiimagine ka pero hindi mo lang pinapansin yung detail. I worried about that too and now, mas napapansin ko na yung nasa utak ko. Mas keen na ako sa details :> Studying architecture will change the way you think and view things kaya you’ll enhance your imagination :>

Our Psychology professor, Antonino Tobias, made us create a short film or documentary about a phobia of our choice. Our group of 12, if I’m not mistaken, chose Nosocomephobia or the fear of Hospitals.

Our group rushed into Hilder’s house and shot the entire film in one night. Now THAT is world class cramming. HAHA! Glen and Hilder are amazing directors and cameramen! Check out Hilder’s awesome editing skills too!

Father Alex loved this plate of mine and I learned so much from it and that is why, this is one of my favorite plates HAHA!

Quezon Hall, UP Diliman

Medium: Watercolor

This plate ruined my streak of 90+ HAHAHA It was fun playing with color but watercolor is a hard medium.

Audi R8 Spyder

This plate was really hard because I chose a white car (I was stupid haha) but then I was able to do it after playing with shades of gray (AHAHAHA this is so punny). Father Alex liked it as well so woohoo!

This plate is much better than my previous watercolor plate and I thank God Father Alex liked this one already haha I touched up this plate in school with colored markers though (not seen in the photo)

P.S. I am sorry for uploading photos from Instagram/my iPhone. I was only able to take photos with my phone during these times (all the time actually haha). More VT plates to come!

My first semester as a sophomore in UST Architecture just ended...

My first semester as a sophomore in UST Architecture just ended and I am terribly sorry for not posting anything. I can blame the lack of time and the amount of plates but to be honest, I was just lazy. I rarely opened Tumblr for the whole semester and I plan to make up for it this semestral break.

My sem was okay just because I miss my blockmates from last year and I always find myself looking for them in my new block but I met awesome people and I got closer to some which is always my favorite part about school. I learned the most from Father Alex, my Visual Technique 3 professor. We managed to touch on several mediums for rendering and Design was just meh for me, as usual. Our major plates were a ferry terminal and a community theater. GenEd was normal, nothing severely life changing.

There were some unspoken issues in my class but we all got over them eventually. There’s this rumoured reshuffling (due to an excessive amount of students in a class) and I don’t know how to feel about it. I’ve grown to like most of my blockmates in 2AR6 and it would be sad to not be with them for the second semester but on the other hand, I want to meet more people. I don’t know so que sera, sera!

P.S. If you follow me on my Instagram(@angelaisawesome), you might’ve seen my VT plates already. I always get a chance to take pictures of my VT plates from my phone just because it’s easy and it’s fulfilling. AHOHOHO!
